Comparison of traditional education and SBE

Measurement Topics
What are measurement topics? What is traditional content?
Identifies a guaranteed curriculum that all students will master Includes all the state standards
Identifies what student will be assessed on in order to move from level to level Has too many standards to master so students are socially promoted
Shows a scoring guide with a score “3” being proficient and requires students to meet this performance standard Doesn’t inform students of the expectations
Is the basis for what teachers and students will use for learning targets Based on a program or a textbook
Identifies what will be reported on the report card Reported using a 100-point scale that is very subjective

Instruction
What is SBE instruction? What is traditional instruction?
Learner-centered Teacher-directed
Balances for the kind of learning that needs to match the content One-size-fits-all
Teaches skills, analytical, and contextual information Doesn’t get to higher level instruction enough
Paces for the learner Requires all students to learn at the same pace
Gathers resources to help students learn a concept Uses the textbook as the curriculum and instruction
Differentiates for the learner Teaches to the middle of the class

Assessment
What are SBE assessments? What are traditional assessments?
Assists in the placement of each student in the right learning level Are not used for student placement
Used by the teacher and learner to inform what the student needs to learn next- Formative assessment Is used only to give a grade
Uses a scoring guide or rubric to inform students of expectations Doesn’t show what the expectations are until students take the assessment
Used by the teacher and student at the end of the level to be accountable for the learning-Summative assessment Is used only at the end of a unit and then the unit class moves on to the next
Is flexible so students can have input how they show what they know and can do Is the same for all students
Used by students to write and monitor goals Not used by students at all

Reporting/Recording
What SBE reporting/recording is? What is traditional reporting/recording?
Supports students by showing their learning trend line Only averages grades
Gives students and parents the ability to track progress throughout the learning (on-line & hard copy) Is only seen by the teacher until grades are released
Shows what measurement topics student has mastered and which ones are yet to be mastered Gives a grade only on a subject- doesn’t show what has been mastered and what hasn’t
Tracks the attainment of standards over multiple years Only keeps track of students' learning one year at a time
